WINSLOW, Ind. – The Pike County Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Coalition has named Sisson Steel Pike County’s  Tobacco-Free Business for the first quarter of 2009. ITPC Project Coordinator Sally Petty presented a certificate to the business on Feb. 4 in honor of their comprehensive tobacco-free policy.

According to President Jim Gaskins, the company has been working on a tobacco-free campus policy for the past two years. The policy was implemented in stages and was instated in July 2008. On Jan. 1, the business cut out smoking, and on Feb. 1, all forms of tobacco were prohibited.

“The health of our employees is important,” Gaskins said.

“All forms of tobacco cause diseases which cost business thousands in healthcare costs. Increased medical costs, higher insurance rates, added maintenance expenses, lower productivity, and higher rates of absenteeism from smoking costs American businesses between $97 and $125 billion every year,” said Petty. “We are proud of the steps Sisson Steel has taken to protect the health of their employees. They set an excellent example for all businesses in Pike and surrounding counties.”
