Indianapolis Debating Smokefree Legislation Again

Look what the Indianapolis Star published today: Advocates want ban on smoking broadened

Bruce Hetrick is right that Indianapolis, and Indiana as a whole, can’t afford to fall behind the healthy trend of smokefree cities and states. Some business owners complain that they are afraid they will lose businesses with a smoking ban, but research has actually proven that a comprehensive smokefree ordinance, like the one Smokefree Indy is now pushing for, does not harm business.

In fact, we will wind up gaining millions of dollars by saving on healthcare costs. Who could turn that away in any economy?

Locally, State Rep. Mark Messmer has said he will support a statewide comprehensive smoking ban, and several businesses here have already gone smokefree or are considering it.

For more information about smokefree workplace policies, see Take Note.

There will be a town hall forum on the Indianapolis policy at 7 p.m. Thursday in the house chambers on the third floor of the statehouse. If you support a smoking ban, I encourage you to attend this meeting, and let your voice be heard about Indy’s policy as well as the proposed statewide legislation.
